Top 10 Startup Funding This Week [02 – 07 October]

Here is a list of top funding deals that happened in Startup Ecosystem this week. Check out the brief description about all of them.

1) Bangalore Based Agri-tech Startup Farm Taaza Raises $8 Million

Bengaluru-based Farm Taaza, a fresh produce supply chain management firm, has recently raised a whopping Rs. 52 crore ($8 million) in a Series A funding round.

The funding round was led by Epsilon Venture Partners, a Hong Kong-based VC funding innovation and entrepreneurship across Asia and Tara India Fund IV, which is managed by IL&FS Investment Managers, among other existing investors of the 2015 founded firm.

Currently functioning in Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad and Ooty, Farma Taaza has plans of putting the capital raised to good use by expanding across South India. Some part of the money will also be utilised by the firm to make the required technological upgrades.

2) Bengaluru-based Car and Bike Rental Platform Drivezy Raises $10 Mn Funding

While China’s bicycle rentals on-demand startup, Ofo is gearing to enter India early next year, its Indian counterpart self-drive car and bike rental firm Drivezy has decided to get ready for the challenge by raising a whooping Rs 65 crore ($10 million) in a part-equity and part-debt round.

Formerly called JustRide, an equity investment totalling $5 million was made by American and Japanese investors, which included Axan Partners, Das Capital and IT Farm, while a consortium of banks and NBFCs including Mahindra Finance, ICICI Bank, Cholamandalam Finance and Shriram Finance have gone for a $5 million investment in debt in Drivezy.

The startup will use the money raised to enter new markets across India and abroad, revealed Ashwarya Singh, CEO and co-founder, Drivezy in a statement. It will also use a part of the capital raised to create rental coins, its own private currency.

3) Student Micro-Financing Startup SlicePay Raises Funding From Russia’s Simile Venture Partners, Others

Bengaluru-based SlicePay, an AI based instant credit app for youngsters in India, has successfully raised a whopping $2 million (approx. Rs 13 crore) in a Series A round funding from Russian early-stage investor Simile Venture Partners and Japanese investment fund Das Capital with participation from existing investor Blume Ventures.

Currently operational in Bangalore, Chennai and Vellore, SlicePay plans to use the money raised to expand to more cities in the country, revealed Rajan Bajaj, co-founder and chief executive of SlicePay in a statement to VCCircle.

4) Used Furniture And Appliances Platform Zefo Raises $9.2 million From Sequoia, Others

Benagluru-based Refurbished furniture and appliance marketplace Zefo has recently revealed that it has raised a whopping Rs. 60 crore ($9.2 million) in Series B funding. The round, which was led by its existing investors Sequoia India and Helion Venture Partners, saw the participation of Singapore-based Bennett, a fund launched by Japanese e-commerce entrepreneur and investor Teruhide Sato.

According to information available on Crunchbase, Zefo has raised almost $16 million till date. This includes the recent Series B funding, the Series A funding the startup raised last year and earlier funding.

5) Smartphone Refurbishing Startup Yaantra Raises $3.1 million From Carpediem And Duane Park

New Delhi-based smartphone refurbishing startup Yaantra has raised a whopping Rs. 20 crore ($3.1 million) in a bridge funding round from its existing investors Carpediem Capital Partners and Duane Park.

According to Jayant Jha, CEO at Yaantra, the funding raised will be used for expanding the startup’s presence to 25 tier-II cities by next year. He is also hopeful that the fresh round will help boost the firm’s relationship with key partners and help maximise the impact of its offerings.

6) Fintech Startup HomeCapital Raises Funding from Venture Catalysts

Venture Catalysts, India’s first integrated incubation recently facilitated an undisclosed amount of investment into a fintech startup HomeCapital, focussed on home down-payment assistance to fist time home buyers.

The funding round was led by VCats angels Anuj Golecha, Gaurav Gandhi, Ram Joukani, Gaurav Singhvi, Vishal Jhunjhunwaala, Anudeep Jhunjhunwaala, Brijesh Thakkar, Revathi Roy, Jagidsh Gothi, Dipan Dalal, and others.

7) Ola Reportedly Raises Whopping $2 Billion From SoftBank, Tencent

India’s homegrown ride-hailing giant Ola has successfully raised a whopping $2 billion in new funding yesterday from a group of high profile investors that includes names such as Japan’s telecom and internet giant SoftBank and China’s Tencent Holdings. The information was uncovered in a report by Bloomberg which cited information from a source familiar with the happenings of the deal.

The person further divulged that the funding round hasn’t been completed yet and there’s a strong chance that the $2 billion will rise towards the end.

According to the report, the funding round has also seen the participation of a venture capital fund, which is being jointly run by Indian industrialist Ratan Tata, U.S. institutional investors and the University of California’s investment arm.

8) Flipkart’s Logistics Arm Ekart Gets Rs 641 cr Funding From Group Firm Klick2Shop

According to information unearthed from recent regulatory filings with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Indian e-commerce leader Flipkart’s logistics arm Ekart has become the recipient of a fresh funding infusion of Rs 641 crore from its very own Singapore-based group firm Klick2Shop Logistics Services International. The fund infusion has taken place through an entity called Instakart Services Private Limited.

The fund infusion in Ekart doesn’t come as a surprise as the recent times have seen various top e-commerce players in the country trying their best to strengthen their logistics network so as to ensure fast and smooth delivery of the heavy load of shipments coming their way during the forthcoming festive season. Prior to the Rs 641 crore capital infusion from Klick2Shop into Ekart through its subsidiary Instakart Services, the Bengaluru-based e-commerce giant had infused a stellar Rs 666 crore into its Instakart some 18 months ago.

People known in the logistical space expect Flipkart to utilise the funds received for setting up and decentralising the warehouses following how goods and services tax (GST) affected the e-commerce industry since it came into play in the country since July 1 this year. The money could also be put to use for hiring more manpower and then setting up last-mile delivery centres.

9) Gurgaon-based Chqbook Raises Funding Led By Youwecan Backed Startup Buddy

The week saw Chqbook – a fintech startup that allows customers to explore, compare, book and get personal finance products like home loans, personal loans and credit cards, raising an undisclosed amount of funding from Youwecan backed Startup Buddy, Apurva Chamaria, global head of corporate marketing, HCL, Sachin Arora, ex-CTO Myntra, Bharat Gupta, Founder of Net Asset Consulting LLP, Amit Manocha, Private equity professional based out of Singapore, and others. Kunal Singhal, Partner at Suresh Chandra and Associates, was the advisor for the transaction. Amit Singhal joined the board at Chqbook while Apurva Chamaria and Sachin Arora joined as advisors to the board.

10) Diagnostics Startup MedGenome To Raise $10 Mn In Series C Round Led By Sequoia

Bengaluru-based genomics research and diagnostics startup Medgenome Labs is in the process of raising around $10 million (about ₹65 crore) in its Series C funding round. The investment is expected to led by Sequoia Capital. In August this year, the startup had already raised $30 million in a funding round led by Sequoia India and Sofina.

While further information is not available regarding the plausible funding round, however if funding takes place then this will mark the second leg of funding in the Series C round and it is believed that the startup will use the proceedings of this round to fund its expansion plans.

India Quarterly Deals Report Q1 2017 - PE Investments Worst Low in 17 Quarters

  • 238 deals worth $3.04 bn in Q1, CY2017 vis-à-vis 432 deals worth $4.19 bn in Q1, CY2016


  • Median deal value quadrupled to $2.25 mn for Q1, 2017 compared to $0.6 mn in Q1, 2016


  • Angel investments at a 4-year low at $28 mn with VC investments dropping by 14% Y-o-Y


  • The top PE deal for the quarter was the Bharti Infratel – KKR, CPPIB deal which at $946 mn pushed up the average deal value



Fund infusion sees better times though investors tread cautiously

  • Investment values doubled against last quarter to $820 mn for Q1 CY2017, though this was a fraction of the $2,500 mn for Q1 CY2016


  • There were no fresh investments of $250 mn or more from investors, this quarter


  • The top 4 fund infusions involving Oman India Joint Investment Fund II, KKR India Credit Fund, ICICI Venture Fund Management’s India Advantage Fund Series IV and IDFC Private Equity Fund IV captured a major share of total funds at $641 mn



Ominous times for PE funds as exit values fall
  • Y-o-Y, the situation seems grim with exits having fallen to $1.4 bn for Q1 CY2017 vis-à-vis $2.1 bn for the same quarter last year


  • Open markets dominated exit deal values at $945 mn, bouncing back as the preferred exit route


  • Key exits recorded for the quarter were the Providence Equity Partners-Idea Cellular deal and the Khazanah Nasional Berhad-Apollo Hospitals deal



  • Delhi NCR continues to rule the roost
  • At $1,246 mn, Delhi saw more action this quarter than Mumbai ($692 mn) and Bangalore ($441 mn) put together

  • Information Technology continued to dominate the space in Delhi NCR with 29 deals in the sector followed by 9 deals in Consumer Discretionary and 4 each in Consumer Staples and Industrials


  • Coming second in terms of deal value was Mumbai with 47 deals amounting to $692 mn, with Information Technology leading the way with 23 deals followed by Consumer Discretionary with 7 deals and Financials at 6 deals


  • Bengaluru registered 53 deals amounting to $441 mn with close to 60% being in the Information Technology space and ~19% in the Consumer Discretionary space. Pune with 8 deals to the tune of $62 mn and Hyderabad with 18 deals amounting to $32 mn made it to the top-5 investment destinations of India



  • Vodafone-Idea deal dominates M&A space


    • M&A deal numbers came in at 226 as opposed to 237 for the last quarter, with the trend of a few large deals contributing to the total value continuing


    • Of the total of $16 bn deal value for Q1 CY2017, the Vodafone-Idea deal saw a majority deal value of $12.4 bn


    • Low median value across deals in the past 5 quarters vis-à-vis higher average deal values indicate a larger number of small ticket transactions in the space


    • The Electronic Components space saw 3 deals followed by Wireless Telecommunications and Pharmaceuticals at 2 each




    Sharing her views on the India Quarterly Deals report, Nita Kapoor, Head India – New Ventures, News Corp and CEO, News Corp VCCircle said, "PE sentiment seems to be extremely cautious and this is clearly reflecting in market performance. Appetite for risk is low with consolidation, job cuts and rollback of funding plans underway. A dip of 22% in deal values with simultaneous decline in exit figures is worrisome, though these are early days and a bounce back is possible, if not probable in the immediate future."

    TA Associates Invests $25.5M in Shilpa Medicare

    Hyderabad-based pharmaceutical company Shilpa Medicare LTD has raised Rs 172.425 crore ($25.5 million) from US-based private equity investor TA Associates Management Lp. TA Associates’ director Naresh Patwari will join the company’s board as an additional director, the firm said.

    On-Demand Delivery Startup ShadowFax Raises $10M

    Hyperlocal logistics startup Shadowfax Technologies Pvt. Ltd has raised $10 million (Rs 68 crore) in Series B funding led by existing investor Eight Roads Ventures, an investment arm of Fidelity International Ltd. The investment will help Shadowfax build its network, consolidate its market position and stabilise performance in existing cities, Eight Roads said in a statement.

    Nandan Nilekani Invests $5M More in 10i Commerce

    Bengaluru-based ecommerce startup 10i Commerce Services has raised $5 million in funding from Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani. With the latest investment, the former chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has so far invested about $10 million in 10i Commerce in several tranches.

    Dekkho Raises $1.2M in Seed Funding; Set to Disrupt the Video Streaming Space

    Dekkho, a new-age streaming platform, has raised $1.2 million from seven marquee angel investors in one of the largest seed funding rounds in India. The company offers a viewing experience that is uncluttered and curated, has high-quality content sourced from leading content providers from India and abroad, consumes less internet bandwidth, offline viewing facility, offers exclusive access to new content, and – above all – is free. Established in March 2016, Dekkho is the brainchild of Tanay Desai and Vinay Pillai.

    Fitness App HealthifyMe Receives An Additional Funding of $1 Million

    Bengaluru-based health/fitness app, HealthifyMe today hit 1 million downloads on Google PlayStore. With a rating of 4.3/5, HealthifyMe is ahead of all the other apps in this space. Adding to this success, the app has also received an additional $1 million (INR 6.7 crores) in funding from Dubai based investor Neelesh Bhatnagar whose company NB Ventures has been actively investing in Indian startups.

    InstantPay Bags Rs 34 Cr Funding

    Delhi-based digital payments and financial services company InstantPay has raised Pre-Series A funding from Singapore-based investors RB Investments and Kaleden Holdings. The funding, which is part of a pre series A round, will be used for the development of new products and geographical expansion across the country. A part of the funding will be used to build the brand and for marketing.

    Omnichannel Book Renting Platform JustBooks Gets Funding From CoCreate Ventures

    Omnichannel book renting platform, JustBooks has raised an undisclosed amount of funding from investment firm CoCreate Ventures that has set up a Rs 15 crore ($2.2 million) fund to help startups pivot or turn around.
    JustBooks plans to deploy the raised funds towards revamping its digital presence, developing its technology for better customer management and loyalty programmes, and bringing more human resources to manage the brand and introduce new categories in books.

    Online Event Booking Platform BookEventz.com Raises Pre-Series A Funding

    BookEventZ, an online Event-Booking platform, raises an undisclosed amount in a successful Pre-Series A round from Lead Angels, Mumbai Angels and Letsventure. Existing investors also participated in this round. Key investors of this round include Girish Mathrubootham (Co-Founder Freshdesk), Anbu Pandian (‎CEO PanZeea Solutions) and Ishan Singh (Director Recapital Ventures) who led previous angel round as well.
