CIBIL Score Now Available on BHIM Payments App

TransUnion CIBIL, India’s leading credit information company, today announced the integration of the consumer CIBIL Score and Credit Information Report (CIR) into BHIM Payments App, India’s homegrown payment app developed by NPCI BHIM Services Limited (NBSL). The integration enables BHIM App users to securely access, view, and track their CIBIL Score and key credit information directly within the app, empowering them with greater visibility of their credit health. Aligned with regulatory guidelines, the integration follows a customer consent-based model where credit information is accessed only after the user’s approval, ensuring transparency and control.

TransUnion CIBIL and NBSL are two premier institutions that are important to India’s financial and digital payments ecosystem. By embedding the CIBIL Score into the BHIM App, the integration places credit awareness alongside everyday financial activities. This enables consumers to make more informed financial decisions by accessing trusted credit information conveniently and securely in a familiar environment.

The BHIM Payments App is designed to support users in managing their everyday financial needs. Built for Indian users, it supports 15+ Indian languages and offers a simple, easy to navigate interface, making it accessible across urban, rural, and semi urban regions. It already enables users to manage money through features like Split Expenses, Family Mode, Spends Analytics, and Action Needed reminders. With the addition of the CIBIL Score, BHIM takes this a step further by helping users not just transact but also stay informed about their credit profile.

Commenting on the association, Mr. Bhavesh Jain, MD and CEO, TransUnion CIBIL, said: “Credit awareness and credit inclusion are at the centre of a strong and resilient credit ecosystem. The BHIM Payments App will enable CIBIL Score and Credit Information Report to be easily accessible to its millions of users. As India moves from a largely transactional approach towards credit to a more carefully planned one, this is an important step in our consumer awareness journey. It supports the development of a better informed, empowered and inclusive credit environment, in keeping with our purpose of driving ‘Information for Good’.”

Lalitha Nataraj, MD & CEO, NPCI BHIM Services Ltd, said: “BHIM Payments App has been built with a clear focus on simplicity and user control. Through our collaboration with TransUnion CIBIL, we are extending this approach to credit awareness, enabling users to access their CIBIL Score easily within the BHIM App. This is a step towards helping users make more informed financial decisions as part of their everyday journeys.”

6 Ways in Which BHIM Payment App Helps Users in Their Digital Payments Journey

6 Ways in Which BHIM Payment App Helps Users in Their Digital Payments Journey

Digital payments are no longer limited to big cities, they’ve become a part of daily life across India, from metros to remote villages. As more people turn to payment apps for everyday needs, digital money management is evolving. It’s no longer just about sending or receiving money; it’s about tracking expenses, staying updated on bills, and having the tools to make informed financial decisions with ease and confidence.

Here are six ways users can take meaningful steps toward financial freedom, using BHIM Payments App:

1. Make Payments in a Language You’re Comfortable With

BHIM Payments App supports more than 15 Indian languages including Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, Tamil, and Odia. This makes it easier for users to navigate the app and complete transactions in their preferred language, especially helpful for shopkeepers, senior citizens, or first-time users in Tier 2 and 3 cities. Using an app that communicates in a known language builds comfort and trust, making digital transactions feel less intimidating.

2. Transact Even with Weak Internet Connectivity

The app is built to work even in areas with low or unstable internet, making it practical for users in rural regions or those who often face network issues. It helps ensure that important payments can still go through, whether at a local market or during daily business hours.

3. Track and Manage Spending Without Extra Effort

BHIM Payments App includes features like Spends Analytics, which gives users a simple monthly view of where their money is going. The Split Expenses option lets people easily share costs with friends or family, useful for roommates, joint travel, or shared groceries, without needing to track it manually.

4. Coordinate Family Expenses in One Place

With Family Mode, users can onboard family members, assign specific payments, and view shared expenses. Whether it’s a couple managing bills or siblings taking care of household expenses, this feature helps keep everyone informed and organised.

5. Allow Trusted People to Help with Payments, While Staying in Control

The UPI Circle feature lets users create a trusted network of individuals who can initiate payments on their behalf, with every transaction requiring the primary user’s approval. It’s especially helpful for elderly users who rely on caregivers or busy parents who want to let their children or household help handle daily payments like groceries or utility bills, all while maintaining full visibility and control over each transaction.

6. Get Reminders for Important Financial Tasks

The Action Needed section offers reminders for pending bills, low balance alerts, or UPI Lite activation. These gentle nudges reduce the risk of missing important payments and help users stay updated without needing to track everything manually. Additionally, users can also pay electricity, water, and other utility bills directly through the app, with no additional charges or hidden fees, making it a convenient way to manage monthly expenses.

In a growing digital economy, having access to simple, reliable tools is key to managing money independently. Features like these are helping users across Bharat take important steps toward financial freedom.

Hackers Claim to have Found Vulnerability in BHIM App; NPCI Denies any Data Compromise

A group of ethical hackers on Monday claimed to have discovered a vulnerability affecting millions using the BHIM app, a claim which was denied by NPCI that operates the small value payments application.

Vpnmentor, which claimed to be the largest virtual private networks review website offering a research lab that helps the online community defend itself against cyber threats, alleged that there has been "data leak" discovered in the payments app.

"The developers of the CSC/BHIM website could have easily avoided exposing user data if they had taken some basic security measures to protect the data," it said.

It claimed that "a massive amount of incredibly sensitive financial data connected to the BHIM mobile payment app was exposed to the public".

Parts of data were being stored "on a misconfigured Amazon Web Services S3 bucket and was publicly accessible", it said.

"The scale of the exposed data is extraordinary, affecting millions of people all over India and exposing them to potentially devastating fraud, theft, and attack from hackers and cybercriminals," it said.

In their study, cybersecurity researchers Noam Rotem and Ran Locar said exposure of BHIM user data is akin to a hacker gaining access to the entire data infrastructure of a bank, along with millions of its users' account information.

"Having such sensitive financial data in the public domain or the hands of criminal hackers would make it incredibly easy to trick, defraud, and steal from the people exposed," they said.

"We would like to clarify that there has been no data compromise at BHIM App and request everyone to not fall prey to such speculations," a statement from state-run National Payments Corporation of India said.

It added that the body follows a high level of security and an integrated approach to protect its infrastructure and continue to provide a robust payments ecosystem. PTI AA

With 7.4 Mn Transactions, Flipkart's PhonePe Claims To Overtake Govt's BHIM App

Flipkart-owned PhonePe, the largest user of Unified Payments Interface (UPI), said it overtook the government's Bharat Interface for Mobile or BHIM app with a 45% share of the total transactions in August.

In an announcement, the company said that on its platform there were 7.47 million UPI transaction in August which is double that of 3.5 million UPI transactions in May this year. Thus, its share rose steadily from 39% in July and 36% in June to 45% in August and thus it has surpassed government's BHIP app in number of transaction as well as in total shares.

PhonePe CEO Sameer Nigam said that the upcoming next version of UPI will enable several new features and drive usage further.

The company is on an overdrive to sign on new merchants, both offline and online, ahead of the festive season which is just round the corner, Nigam said. “We have already integrated around 30 of the top 100 online merchants on the PhonePe app and in the offline space we are going live in 15 pan-India chains this quarter"

According to the latest data released by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), the total number of UPI transactions stood at 16.6 million in August, of which BHIM's share was 41% with around 6.8 million transactions.

Online firms such as FreshMenu, RailYatri, AbhiBus, Box8 and TicketNew have integrated with PhonePe while offline players such as Apollo Pharmacy , Barista, Spencer's Retail and Café Cof fee Day are offering PhonePe as a payment option. “The bulk of our merchant transactions are through UPI,“ said Nigam.

Nigam further said that PhonePe achieved a phenomenal 66% month-on-month volume growth in August.

Last month, PhonePe had announced that it has achieved a phenomenal $2.5 Billion total payment volume (TPV) annual runrate which the company claims is the fastest ramp up seen in India’s digital payments market to date. PhonePe’s monthly transactions have grown 800% since December last year, fueled largely by exponential growth in online merchant, mobile recharge and bill payment transactions.

BHIM App will be Available on iOS in 10 Days

BHIM, the unified app for UPI-based payments launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 30th last year, has been generating a lot of buzz since its launch. According to a recent tweet put up by Amitabh Kant, CEO, Niti Aayog, the BHIM app has been successful in crossing 3 million downloads in just five days since its launch with over 500,000 transactions done. But, unfortunately, iOS users have been missing out on all the action since the app was only available for Android users. Well, not anymore.

The BHIM app, which has been developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), is expected to make its iOS debut in about 10 days from now. Along with the iOS version, the app, which is currently only available in Hindi and English, will also come out with several more multilingual versions.

BHIM in the BHIM app stands for Bharat Interface for Money. The app, which is topping the Google Play Store charts in India just a few days after its launch, has been named BHIM after Babasaheb Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar.

The app allows payments via the United Payments Interface (UPI), which makes sure that money is debited or credited directly to a user’s bank account. For those users who don't have UPI on their bank accounts yet, BHIM also supports transfers via MMID and IFSC code. UPI payments is preferred as against any other method as it only requires a Virtual Payee Address and a user doesn’t have to remember and share his/her bank details, thus reducing the risks of any fraud or theft. BHIM is also expected to support Aadhaar-based payments in the future.

img_8634

The BHIM app binds together with the user’s device and mobile number. The users are required to set up a pin to login into the BHIM app each time they want to use it. There's another pin called the UPI Pin, which is required to carry out the transactions on the app.

For those sceptical about using the app due to the recent fraud and theft cases regarding mobile payments, the BHIM app developers have a three factors of authentication at place. There's one that binds the app with the device and mobile number, the second one that requires a login pin, and finally, the third one in which a separate authentication pin is required. To make the security tighter, even for regenerating their UPI Pin, a user is required to have access to their debit card details.

The government has also decided to provide UPI payments integration to USSD platform where a user can just simply dial *99# from their feature phones or even smartphones and carry out UPI based transactions without having to depend on the internet. Since India has an internet penetration of just 34.8 %, this move was well-needed.

What's interesting to note is that Paytm, one of the most famous and used mobile wallets in India after the demonetisation phase is also supporting UPI to let users load their wallets. As previously stated, UPI is a direct bank-to-bank payment method, but for now the BHIM app has put a daily limit of Rs. 20,000.
