Firm and Dispatchable Renewable Energy (FDRE) is renewable power engineered to behave like conventional electricity — combining solar, wind, and battery storage to deliver reliable, schedulable supply that utilities can depend on, including during peak demand hours.

FDRE represents the second phase of India’s renewable energy journey: moving from capacity addition to dependability. With installed solar capacity crossing 150 GW in March 2026, FDRE ensures that this massive renewable base can be harnessed in a way utilities can plan around. It is now one of the defining procurement formats in India’s utility‑scale renewable energy market.

Serentica Renewables, the renewable energy arm of the Vedanta Group and a leading renewable energy provider in India, today announced the commissioning of Phase 1 of its 1 GWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Bikaner. The milestone marks the entry into utility scale energy storage for the Commercial & Industrial (C&I) sector and represents a significant step towards delivering reliable, dispatchable renewable energy to India's energy intensive industries.

The first phase comprises a 200 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) that stores surplus renewable energy generated during the day and discharges it during peak demand hours, enabling the supply of clean power during nighttime. The project has been developed with a modular architecture that offers operational flexibility, scalability and rapid response capabilities, while strengthening grid stability and supporting higher integration of renewable energy.

The Bikaner project powers one of the world's first time block Round the Clock (RTC) renewable power arrangements for industrial consumers, demonstrating how battery storage can transform intermittent renewable energy into dependable, 24x7 clean power. The commissioning marks an important milestone in Serentica's vision of delivering firm, dispatchable renewable energy solutions that enable industries to decarbonize without compromising operational reliability.

The facility has been established with integrated Cell-to-Container manufacturing capabilities, enabling production of battery modules, trays, racks and fully integrated containerised Systems to serve commercial, industrial, renewable energy and utility-scale applications.

GEON, the future technologies division of Kabra Extrusiontechnik Ltd, has successfully completed the integration and commissioning of a 2.88 GWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at Khavda, Gujarat, within five months. This project is one of the largest utility-scale BESS deployments in India and is now fully commercially operational.

The installation is part of the growing renewable energy infrastructure at Khavda, which is emerging as one of India's key clean energy hubs. Geon's scope covered system integration, execution, testing, and commissioning — including the integration of Power Conditioning Systems (PCS), transformers, and advanced energy management systems (EMS).

Hyderabad-headquartered Cygni Energy, India’s largest independent energy storage solutions company, announced today the commencement of its Phase-I, fully operational and automated Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Gigafactory. Located in E-Mobility Valley, at the Electronics Manufacturing Clusters (EMC) Maheshwaram, Hyderabad, it is also India’s first “Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design” (LEED) qualified facility equipped with an Advanced Engineering Lab and Battery Management System (BMS) Lab.

Set up with an investment of over ₹100 crores, the 1,60,000 sq. ft Phase-I facility is located on a 5-acre campus and is designed with an initial capacity to produce 4.8 GWh of high-capacity battery packs for electric vehicles and energy storage systems. Shri. Jayesh Ranjan, Special Chief Secretary to Government of Telangana, and CEO Industry & Investment Cell in CMO, unveiled the first phase in the presence of Prof. Ashok Jhunjhunwala, Chairman, IIIT-Hyderabad, Mr. Srini Raju, Founder, iLabs Group, alongside many industrialists and the leadership team of Cygni on Wednesday.

In his address Shri. Jayesh Ranjan commended Cygni for completing its first milestone and setting up the BESS Gigafactory. “The inauguration of Cygni's battery manufacturing gigafactory in Telangana marks a transformative step toward sustainable energy, manufacturing excellence, and innovation. This facility not only strengthens India’s commitment to clean energy but also creates jobs, fosters local talent, and builds a robust ecosystem for the future of energy storage solutions”.

Venkat Rajaraman, Founder and CEO of Cygni said, “This Gigafactory positions us to lead in the energy storage sector, delivering high-quality, safe battery packs across multiple applications. Cygni's Automated BESS Assembly Line is engineered for advanced, high-quality BESS module manufacturing, leveraging globally recognized best practices such as Poka-Yoke-enabled stations and end-to-end traceability. We plan to grow exponentially in energy storage over the next few years in India and internationally”.

“In Phase II, we are scaling our Gigafactory’s capacity to 10.8 GWh in the existing facility itself. With a total investment of Rs. 250 Cr across 2 phases, this will result in direct and indirect job creation of over 1,000 jobs in the next 24 months. As part of this expansion, we will be adding three additional automated 2 GWh cell-to-pack manufacturing lines and container integration facilities to our existing lines, to meet the rising demand for stationary and e-mobility storage applications.” Rajaraman added.

Going forward, Cygni will provide advanced high-capacity energy storage solutions featuring modular, scalable designs and integrated with Machine Learning for predictive analysis, Digital Twin technology for real-time monitoring, high-performance energy management systems, seamless smart grid-code integration, and precision-engineered manufacturing. It also leverages research on futuristic technologies and battery chemistries through its long-term partnership with IIT-Madras, such as Cell-to-Pack (CTP) and Cell-to-Chassis (CTC) Design Architectures, sodium-ion batteries, and super-capacitors.

Cygni has manufactured and delivered 500 MWh of batteries for the power and energy segment. Currently, it has a pipeline of 1 GWh in orders for BESS projects and EV battery packs, backed by a nationwide service network and an experienced project commissioning team.

This production line is capable of manufacturing 105kWh liquid cooled base modules using advanced 314Ah cells, serving as the fundamental building blocks for nearly all energy storage containers worldwide. The Manufacturing Execution System (MES) Software in this BESS manufacturing line ensures seamless production monitoring, real-time data analytics, quality control, and enhanced traceability, driving operational efficiency and product reliability.

Reliance Power Subsidiary Wins India's Largest Solar and Battery Storage Project

Reliance Power has recently made headlines with its subsidiary, Reliance NU Suntech Private Limited, securing a significant contract from the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI). The contract involves developing a 930 MW solar power project along with a 465 MW/1,860 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). This marks India's largest solar and battery storage project, showcasing a major leap in renewable energy infrastructure.

This project is notable for being the second-largest deployment of grid storage batteries at a single site in Asia, after China.

The project will provide four hours of peak power supply daily, offering much-needed relief to DISCOMs that often purchase power at high rates during peak hours. Reliance NU Suntech will develop the project on a build-own-operate basis, and SECI will enter into a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with them.

Besides this, Reliance NU Suntech has been involved in several notable projects recently. Sasan Power Ltd is one of Reliance Power's flagship projects, featuring the world's largest integrated coal-based power plant with a capacity of 3,960 MW. 

Reliance NU Suntech has been actively participating in various renewable energy projects, including solar and wind energy projects across India. The Anil Ambani promoted company has secured significant allocations in Inter State Transmission System (ISTS) -connected solar power projects, contributing to the national grid's stability and sustainability.
