The inaugural webinar held yesterday with the theme 'Investor Awareness: A key to Financial Well-being' had participants from Ministry of Finance (MoF), SEBI and top Indian and international exchanges.

Mr. Anand Mohan Bajaj , Additional Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs (DEA), Ministry of Finance (MoF) was the Guest of Honour for the inaugural session. Mr. Bajaj emphasized on the fact that the investors are the natal element for the growth of the market. He said, "Making India a 5 Trillion economy is still a mission in spite of the pandemic situation and we are very confident to achieve it with the government reforms and strong market systems. For a well-developed capital market, we need to have the relevant globus policy in place which should include well established exchanges, clearing and settlement systems, very robust regulator and surveillance fame work, money market arrangements, strong legal framework and accurate information about the financial soundness and future prospects of corporate must be available on timely basis."

Mr. Ananta Barua , Whole Time Member, SEBI was the Chief Guest. He spoke about how investors are benefited through four factors available in the capital market which support and motivate them to stay invested in the market. First one being Ease of Investment and level of transparency where through multiple products investors can invest through various online platforms with so much ease. "Transparency in transaction process in secondary markets is important," he said. Second being Regulation an important factor to control misuse of client's securities and prevention of market manipulation. Third being Risk Management where it is important and necessary for the intermediaries to consider risk factors and invest client's money very carefully and fourth being Governance where the focus needs to be on good corporate governance.

Mr. V S Sundaresan, Executive Director, SEBI said intermediaries have an important role to connect investors with the capital market. In his key note address, he mentioned the importance of education of new investors before entering into capital market. He spoke about the importance of investor awareness programs and appreciate ANMI for working towards investors education and awareness through seminars and events etc.

Mr. Lyndon Chao , Managing Director, Head of Equities & Post Trade, Asia Securities Industry & Financial Markets Association (ASIFMA) was the international guest speaker for the webinar. He spoke about the importance to strengthen capital market through policies and infrastructure. He appreciated the various reforms in Indian markets and said India is a fast-growing country, having strong fundamentals along with easy market access which encourages global investors.

The 'Investor Awareness Week' is the Indian offshoot of the World Investor Week (WIW) organised by International Organisation of Securities Commission (IOSCO) in October every year with its members and securities market regulators across 6 continents. The purpose of this event is to raise awareness about the importance of investor education and protection and highlight the various initiatives of securities regulators in these two critical areas.

Highlighting the importance of investor education and awareness in the dynamic and ever-changing securities markets, Mr. Ajay Tyagi , Chairman, SEBI, said: "Complexities of the securities market have grown manifold during the last three decades with so many developments relating to market structure, newer products to name a few. There is a need for investors to make informed investment decisions. Thus, investor awareness and education play an important role in educating the investor."
