Kerala Blockchain Academy (KBA) of state-run Indian Institute of Information Technology & Management (IIITM-Kerala) has become the first Indian Institution to get membership of Hyperledger Project hosted by Linux Foundation, reported Business Standard.

Launched in 2016, Hyperledger is an open source collaborative effort created to advance cross-industry blockchain technologies. Indian IT firm Wipro is already a member of Hyperledger.

Launched in January this year, KBA is first of its kind academy and initiative in India. It is a joint initiative of the IIITM-K and the global Blockchain Education Network (BEN) and seeks to explore the possibilities of leveraging blockchain technology for public good, capacity building initiatives, promoting disruptive innovations and entrepreneurship.

According to the KBA website, the academy has been designed for those with little or no prior experience with Blockchain, wanting to train and transition into Blockchain from other careers.

Hyperledger community has grown to 231 organizations in more than 25 countries. Its members include IBM, Cisco Systems Inc, the Bank of England and JPMorgan Chase & Co, among others.

In March 2017, JPMorgan, Microsoft Corp, Intel Corp and others formed a blockchain group called the Ethereum Enterprise Alliance, later in July of same year, Andhra Pradesh state government joined the group to became the first state government outside the US. Additionally, many of the world’s largest banks invested $100 million in blockchain consortium R3.

In last July, the Hyperledger Project has released its first blockchain code that can be used by large businesses to build software.
