Gurugram, earlier known as Gurgaon, is poised to outcast Bengaluru to become India's silicon valley at least in terms of number of tech startups the cities have.

In a new announcement made by Haryana's state government, the state government is planning to build the India's biggest startup hub in Gurgaon over the next couple of years.

Currently, the biggest startup incubator tag is with Hyderabad's T-Hub and Haryana government plans to build the startup hub in the line of same.

Called as 'Global Start-Up Village', Gurgaon's startup hub will also be developed under public-private partnership model just like T-Hub and will include research and incubator facilities as well.

The hub is likely to come up on a 2.5 acre plot. The exact location and the land is yet to be finalized and to be envisaged under the Haryana Entrepreneur and Start-up Policy 2017.

The 'Global Startup Village' project report and estimates are ready, the government can allot funds for the hub. The Haryana government has already announced a Rs 100-crore corpus to aid upcoming start-ups in the city under its 2017 policy, reported Times of India citing officials privy to the development.

"The idea behind the start-up village is to create a space for entrepreneurs and researchers, where they can do their research and put their ideas into action. With this village, we wish to strengthen Gurgaon's image as an international start-up hub," said a senior government official.

Sources said the T-Hub in Hyderabad, had inspired the idea behind the start-up village in Gurgaon. T-Hub was set up by the Telangana government in 2015 in association with Indian School of Business and The International Institute for Information Technology, Hyderabad. The Hyderabad facility is spread across 70,000 sq ft.

Hyderabad's T-Hub is inspiring many other Indian states to replicate the success it got among global startup ecosystem. In November 2017, Kejriwal government in Delhi as a state also announced that it will soon launch a Startup incubator in line with T-Hub.

Notably, Gurgaon - touted as millennium city, also houses World's largest co-working space facility launched by firm WeWork in 2017. Its currently has 12,000 seating capacity.

Last month, another northern state Punjab had also announced that it will soon launch a startup incubator called as 'Start-up Hub'. The incubator will be located in Mohali city.
