Indian ecommerce biggie Flipkart has decided to avail the services of Microsoft to take its sales figures to another level. According to media reports, the firm has decided to start using artificial intelligence and machine learning-based solutions to make future sales easy.

The firm seems to have learnt its lesson from its previous ‘Big Billion Day’ sales debacle as this time the firm didn’t face any major problem. According to an Economic Times (ET) report, the ecommerce website witnessed almost 30 times its usual amount of traffic during the sale period and is now looking at ways through which it can make its technology systems better before the next sale.

“AI and ML are becoming the focus for us now. We think there is a lot of opportunities to optimise how we do things like merchandising and offer placement. So we are putting those systems in place and looking to take away any kind of manual tuning and optimisation,” said Vinay YS, Flipkart’s vice-president of engineering in a statement to ET.

Flipkart has been closely engaged with the American software, which has put in a whopping $200 million to build those capabilities. According to Vinay, whenever the firm talks about Microsoft, it is mostly likely from the point of view of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning as those are the only two capabilities of the firm’s that Flipkart is counting on leveraging right now. Vinay also revealed that the firm is looking forward to partnering with the company on aspects such as voice recognition.

Earlier this year, the Indian ecommerce unicorn had joined hands with Microsoft to make Azure the firm’s exclusive cloud-computing platform. Flipkart is currently not availing the services of any public cloud as the firm has built a large private cloud infrastructure of its own. It was approximately two years ago that Flipkart invested major money in its own data centre. Vinay in his interview also revealed that when it comes to pure cloud front, Flipkart is still evaluating on what Microsoft has to offer to them in India and what is it exactly that they’re looking for.

Microsoft has been pursuing AI quite enthusiastically for some time now. It was only recently that the firm announced that they’re considering unveiling a new healthcare department at its Cambridge research facility, as a part of its strategic plans to explore the potential of its AI software to enter the huge health market. Furthermore, last week, the company launched an AI-based automated threat investigation system that took the security of devices to a whole other level.
