The city of Bengaluru will soon become home to India's first multi-faceted artificial intelligence and robotics centre, according to a report in the Deccan Herald. To be established within Bengaluru's Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) campus, the centre will be working on exploring the potential of data analytics, which is one of the various emerging technology's popular nowadays, for various ecosystems.
While Defence Research and Development Organisation has already been running the Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (CAIR) in Bengaluru since 1986, the centre only looks after providing technological and secure communication and information systems for the defence services. This is what makes the new IIIT centre different from CAIR.
Machine intelligence and data analytics technology can work wonders for the city if put to use logically and efficiently. Currently, traffic police in Bengaluru have to manually monitor the data collected from CCTV cameras installed all around the city in order to catch traffic violations, accidents etc. But, with machine intelligence and data analytics , they can now analyse the data electronically on a real-time basis.
Not only transportation, machine intelligence and data analytics can also be used to tend to issues that the world is currently facing in sectors such as education, governance, rural and urban development among others.
The state government has already set aside a sum of Rs five crore for setting up the centre, which is being established on the recommendation of Karnataka Knowledge Commission (KKC).
The commission is the same one that constituted a 18-member special task group on artificial intelligence. The group is co-chaired by Chiranjib Bhattacharya, professor, Department of Computer Science and Automation, Indian Institute of Science, and Venkatesh Valluri, chairman and president of Ingersoll Rand (Indian region).
Talking to Deccan Herald, KKC member-secretary Mukund Rao said, "The centre will be first of its kind in India which will have both industrial and also education components. A broad framework on the modalities of the centre is being worked out and the detail project report is likely to be submitted to the Information Technology department within a month."
Rao also shared that there are also plans of providing courses for students on various aspects of data analytics and related fields. The curriculum for the same will be prepared soon.
The state government is reportedly also planning on coming up with a policy for hi-tech and frontier industries like artificial intelligence and machine learning, stem cell research, bespoke DNA medicine, 3D printing, robotics, nano technology, big data analytics among others.
