Indian government seems to have finally woken up to realise the potential Artificial Intelligence can serve in the development of the Indian subcontinent. In a recent development, Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has set up Task Force with a mission of exploring possibilities to leverage the opportunities that Artificial Intelligence (AI) has to offer for development across various fields.
Chaired by IIT Madras' V. Kamakoti, the members of the task force include Anuj Kapuria, High Tech RoboticSystemz Ltd., Anurag Agarwal, Institute of Genomics & Integrative Biology, CSIR; Ashish Dutta, IIT Kanpur; Ashwini Asokan, Mad Street Den, Chennai; Gautam Shroff, Vice President & Chief Scientist, TCS Innovation Labs, Tata Consultancy Services, Gurgaon; G. H. Rao, HCL Technology; G. Madhusudan, IIT Madras; G.V.N. Apparao, ex-chief technology officer, Cognizant; Komal Sharma Talwar, founder, XLPAT; Kunal Nandwani, founder & CEO, uTrade Solutions; Shantanu Chaudhary, IIT Delhi, Department of Electrical Engineering; Vijay Kumar Sankarapu, founder & CEO, Arya.in; Ajay Kumar, additional secretary, Ministry of Electronics & IT; Amandeep Gill, Ambassador/PR to CD, Geneva; K. Apart from the regular members, the task force will witness active participation from UIDAI, DRDO, NITI Aayog, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and Department of Science & Technology.
Called the ‘task force on AI for India’s Economic Transformation,' the group will be working on coming up with concrete and implementable recommendations for industry, research and government institutions.
The setting up of the task force comes in at a time when the Modi government is working on reviewing some of the major ages-old manufacturing and industrial policies in the country.
Speaking at the launch of the task force, Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman pointed out that after a rapid development in the fields of information technology and hardware, it is now the time for the world to make way for a fourth industrial revolution driven by power of big data, high computing capacity, artificial intelligence and analytics. She further added that the main aim of Industry 4.0 is digitisation the manufacturing sector and taking it to whole other level.
