In order to encourage the growing agri tech industry in the country, IIIT-Hyderabad and National Institute of Agricultural Extension Management (MANAGE) have recently joined hands and signed an MOU which aims to set up an Agri tech startup accelerator programme.

Currently, about 60–70% of Indian population (directly or indirectly) depends upon the Agriculture sector. But, unfortunately, due to lack of innovation in the sector, it currently just contributes over 16–17% of the country's GDP. This is where the agri tech industry can make all the difference.

IIIT-Hyderabad and MANAGE's Agri Tech Startup Accelerator Programme will be identifying, supporting and facilitating idea-stage enterprises making use of innovation and technology to solve agriculture related problems being encountered in the Indian subcontinent.

Commenting on the collaboration, P J Narayanan, Director, IIIT-Hyderabad said, “IIIT-Hyderabad is looking forward to collaborating with MANAGE to improve India’s agricultural sector and take technology to the masses. As IIIT-Hyderabad believes strongly in applied research, this is a great opportunity for us to take our research from lab to land”.

Founded in 1987, MANAGE has been able to establish a unique reputation for itself in India for nurturing and providing a platform for young entrepreneurs and startup companies in the country to flourish in the agriculture sector. Its coming together with IIIT-Hyderabad is expected to give a further boost to agri startups in India as they will be able to get direct guidance from IIIT-Hyderabad's research scholars and professors.

Speaking about the MoU signed between the two parties, V Usha Rani, Director General of MANAGE said, Director General of MANAGE, V Usha Rani said, “MANAGE is very happy to sign this MOU with IIIT-Hyderabad. IT knowledge has helped many sectors, be it health, industry or even the service sector but it hasn’t yet reached grass-root levels in the agricultural sector." She further added, "There’s huge scope for this, considering agriculture is a complex life science, and technology can play a crucial role in it."

MANAGE is hoping that its MOU with IIIT-Hyderabad will help make a significant impact on farmers’ lives, entrepreneurs and agri-start-ups in India.
