Earth's health is in dire situation. With the pollution and population rising continuously, humans need to make sure that they do what little they can do to improve the living conditions on the planet and make it survive a little longer. In what could be considered as a small but significant step towards making this possible, the Andhra Pradesh state government has decided to have smart and electric vehicles for garbage disposal under Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) limits. This is a first of its kind initiative initiated by a state government in the Indian subcontinent and a Hyderabad-based startup called Gayam Motor Works is helping the government in making this possible.

The big initiative was inaugurated by Andhra Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu on Monday. Under the initiative, emission free electric auto-rickshaws with advanced hydraulic disposal system will be deployed in Vijayawada city, which will help in keeping both garbage and pollution, which are two of the most dangerous environmental calamities that exist today, in check.

At the inauguration event, Naidu voiced his true opinions about waste management and said that he and his government considers waste management as a very important requirement for sustainable ecological development. He even admitted that the operating standards currently being employed by his government have failed the efficiency test and are highly resource-intensive.

Explaining what promotion the state to come up with such an initiative, Naidu shared that even though the city has waste management services in nearly every community, it sadly hasn't been able to furnish the results they desired. After looking into the matter, they unraveled that the inefficiency was a result of outdated manual collection methods and logistical processes that they were employing which lacked efficient data-driven solutions. That's why the state government decided to buy energy efficient electric auto rickshaws that will help the government in saving around Rs 3.2 lakh per one vehicle in five years, which amounts to a big figure.

The electric vehicles that will be used for the initiative have been supplied to the Andhra government by Gayam Motor Works, a 2011 electric vehicle manufacturing startup with a vision to make the future of transportation smart and electric.

According to a statement given by Vijayawada Municipal Corporation's (VMC) Commissioner J Nivas to The New Indian Express, with the new initiative going live, they will now be able to easily monitor Vijayawada's waste management system from a single location. The fleet of electric vehicles that they have employed will be able to communicate real-time status to actionable web-based software. Nivas believes that the initiative will be a great benefit to the people of Vijayawada as it will help optimise operations, beautify public spaces and significantly reduce carbon footprint.

With Internet of Things (IoT) technology onboard, VMC supervisors will be able to keep a close tab on several aspects such as waste pick up points, vehicle routes and disposal alerts from a single dashboard. This will help in improving per vehicle productivity, reduce non- compliance and eliminate the need to manually keep a track for monitoring and escalation. Further, electric autos equals zero greenhouse gas emissions and zero fuel consumption, which is currently much needed by the planet.
