Keeping in line with the promise that Google made earlier this year when its Indian origin global chief executive officer Sundar Pichai visited the Indian subcontinent and unveiled the Google Digital Unlocked program, a program aimed at getting all of India's 51 million small and medium businesses (SMBs) online. The tech giant on Tuesday rolled out "Website With Google My Business”, a new feature that will help SMBs and startups in India build a mobile optimised website instantly right from their phone in less than 10 minutes.

India currently boosts of more than 51 million small and medium businesses (SMBs) today that are actively contributing a good 37 per cent to country's GDP. Unfortunately, out of these, only 32% have a presence online or are truly being able to take advantage of the power of the digital world for the betterment of their businesses. It is this balance 68% of the businesses that Google India aims to digitally empower by the end of year 2017. The new tool will help Google in realising this mission.

Being made available in ten languages including English, Hindi, Bengali, Telugu, Marathi, Tamil, Urdu, Gujarati, Kannada and Malayalam, the “Website with Google My Business” tool will let businesses create their first website absolutely free of cost.

Available for Google My Business users, this new feature will provide templated, editable websites for SMBs created from their data and photos on Google Maps. The tech giant makes use of small businesses listing to build the website, taking care of the design and makes sure that their website is easily found in Search and Maps.

Explaining what made them come up with a free website tool for SMBs in India, Shalini Girish, director, marketing solutions, Google said “With over 400 million Indians online, and 300 million of them on smartphones, the internet has emerged as the go-to destination to research and buy. So it's important for businesses to be where customers are. However, Small business owners tell us that building a website can be complex, expensive and time-consuming. In order to solve these problems for them, we introduced a new simple, free, and fast way to build a mobile-optimised website through ‘Website With Google My Business.'

According to Google, the websites created with ‘Website With Google My Business' tool will help businesses connect more easily with their customers and guide them on what exactly they want them to do next, like maybe call their business, book an appointment, or even sign up for mailing list to remain updated on all the latest products/services that the business comes up with.

In order to gauge the market problems and needs, Google had even been running a pilot roll-out programme for the past five months with 120,000 Indian businesses.

As part of the website builder tool, Google even gifts the businesses their own free domain or they also have the option of buying a domain of their own choice with Google Domains right from ‘Google My Business’.
