It has been around five years since the rumours of tech giant Samsung launching the world's first foldable smartphone first started surfacing in the tech world, but till now all we have heard are words and no physical action has actually taken place. Well, according to a recent report from Korean news site ETNews, all this is expected to change soon and this much-awaited foldable smartphone will finally be unveiled to the world later this year.

According to the report, the South-Korean giant is gearing to launch a prototype of the device soon and make it available to its partners so that they can test them and assess its demand from consumers. The smartphone giant will only be producing about thousands of these devices for handing out purposes, meaning a commercial release will not be happening this year.

The report from Korean news site ETNews is on the same lines as an earlier report from the Korea Herald, which said that the phones will be unveiled in Q3, and the company hopes to churn more than 100,000 units.

Since the rumours started floating in the market, the concept of foldable screen smartphones has been gaining a lot of traction as it will let its users double the size of their smartphone screen without taking any more space in the user's pocket. When launched, the smartphones can prove to be a major turning point for Samsung in the smartphone market. Samsung has been constantly embroiled in a tough war with US-based tech giant Apple for a larger share of the smartphone market.

According to the ETNews report, Samsung has reportedly already shown an early prototype of foldable screen smartphone device to some "major mobile network providers" at the Mobile World Congress that took place in Barcelona from 27 February to 2 March 2017. Mobile World Congress is the world’s largest gathering for the mobile industry, organised by the GSMA and held in the Mobile World Capital, Barcelona.

Since Samsung has a strong policy of not commenting on market speculations and new products, the company has stayed away from divulging any details about the foldable smartphones. However, a patent application from the electronics giant did give us a few cues about how the smartphone might end up looking like. According to the patent application filed to the Korean patent Office, the smartphone can be expected to have a fold in the middle of the screen, which will allow the user to close like a book. When unfolded, the phone will look similar to any other smartphone, just a little longer than the traditional ones.

While a patent application doesn't guarantee that the final product will end up looking like the same, but it does give us a rare insight on how the Samsung engineers are envisaging the product.

Keep watching this space to know more about the world's first foldable screen smartphone.
