There's a saying in the gadget world. Add Bluetooth to anything, and you have got a potential winner right then and there. Taking this magnificent technology a notch higher is its new and improved version - Bluetooth 5, which according to many reports can be expected to be announced next week.

Being helmed as the new generation of Bluetooth technology, Mark Powell, Bluetooth Special Interest Group executive director announced the news about the big unveiling.

Yesterday, the organization (Bluetooth Special Interest Group) officially announced Bluetooth 5 in a formal press release. This new improved technology would offer double the range and four times the speed of the current Bluetooth 4.2 standard in use. This means, it will offer data transfer of up to 2 Mbps and a maximum range of 300 meters.

If you thought this is only what is new, you're wrong. The new Bluetooth technology will also come with a larger “advertising packet” size.

These packets will be able to send information to another device without even pairing the devices. Won't that be awesome for connecting Bluetooth speakers?

The technology can come in handy for Bluetooth beacons and various other location profile devices like Microsoft’s Treasure Tag or device hand-off similar to Microsoft’s upcoming Continuity-like feature.

According to rumors, the new Bluetooth 5 might also come with lower-power modes for Internet of Things (IoT) devices.

Whether or not the new spec will require a new hardware is something we will have to wait and watch.
