The Kerala state government has decided to open the year 2016 with a bang for its entrepreneurial base. By giving an in-principle go ahead to set up an accelerator programme for startups in the state, the Kerala government is determined to make Kerala a startup heaven. Apparently, a delegation from Silicon Valley has already signed a formal agreement with the state government regarding the same.

Reportedly, the Kerala government gave its in-principle nod to the project in-principle only because of a letter sent to the states's chief minister Oommen Chandy and an online discussion that took place with industries principal secretary P H Kurian. Based on the agreement, the state has agreed upon to implement the ambitious project ensuring by ensuring to take care of a part of investment, infrastructure and space cost with some support coming from private sponsors.

A Silicon Valley based non-profit organisation named Cleantech Open is taking care that the states's project is properly implemented. Cleantech Open is a renowned name in the startup industry for running the world's largest accelerator for clean technology startups that too in partnership with the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation.

The Kerala accelerator aims to build technologies that would ensure clean water, green buildings, waste management and clean transport for the future generations.

According to Arun George, chief executive officer of a cleantech company Avant Garde Innovations, " The project aims at providing a global ecosystem to accelerate existing incubator companies at Technopark and Infopark through mentorship training by global experts. It will ensure venture capital funds for Kerala startups through the Silicon Valley network."

In the first year of the accelerator operation, about 30 startups would be selected for the programme, out of which the top 10 graduating ones are expected to generate about Rs 30 crore soon after.
