In the wake of recent Chennai flood that saw nearly 2 million people having devastating effects including killing of over 500 people Google has introduced flood alerts to the range of information that's available through Google Public Alerts in India.

Google will use data provided by the Central Water Commission (CWC) to allow users to track floods and check river level information for more than 170 areas observed by the agency across India. These alerts are available on Google web search, Google Now cards in the Google app, Google Maps, and on the Public Alerts homepage, both on computer and mobile devices.

Clicking on the alert will show information with details about the hazard, including a map and expected timeline, as well as tips on how to stay safe.
