The Story Of MyMovieRack - From College Startup To India's Favourite Portal Reviewing & Rating Movies

MyMoiveRack is India's first 'personal' web platform dedicated both to fans of movies and TV series alike. We love watching movies and TV serials and off course we like to talk about them more, don’t we? The seeds for this were planted by Piyush Arya during college days and initial version was launched in college itself in 2012, since then they have taken a year and half to sprout.

"Though there are a few websites already, some of them are so data oriented that it's hard to consume it quickly by users. And all the foreign based websites lack the presence of Indian audience as well as records for movies and TV series made by Indian Film industry. The few which are there serve biased opinions or paid reviews," says Piyush, a hardcore developer from heart. So MyMovieRack decided to be a platform that is a one stop shop for all movie buffs who are more than casual movie watchers.

MyMovieRack has an intuitive rating system which involves feelings like 'must-watch, slow, time pass'. This provides a better way to express one's feelings about the things one loved or hated and also to communicate as well as infer the same. This helps users to quickly express as much as possible in just couple of clicks without writing long reviews for each and every show.

The site not only helps to track the ratings, but also has a buzz section where one can shoot and store his favorite one-liners, memes, upload stills as well as discover more. So you need not go anywhere else for all the masala content.

Along with Piyush, Priyank Bhatnagar, Manish Pandey and Sumit Gupta handle the portal. They are all batch mates from college (MNNIT, Allahabad) and working in corporates like Microsoft, Adobe along with handling MyMovieRack. The website works on fuzzy search which lets you search movies/TV series just by phrases like "Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie movies" in search bar against the advance search where you specifically find things with help of filters etc. They started from college campus, the right place which has the highest density of movie watchers. They then proceeded with higher stages of the demography. "And in next 3-4 years, we wish to see MyMovieRack.com sitting as a bookmark on every browser on the computer of every movie buff on this planet," says Priyank.

During past 1 year, they were testing a lot on parallel beta link to a certain set of users which helped them a lot to get things right. As a message for future entrepreneurs, Manish says, "Make a product that you find irresistible and useful." To this, Sumit adds, "Learn to say No. It helps you stay focused.” They follow the motto ‘Don't fear failure, fear mediocrity’ which helps them try new and crazy things.

"I never thought of MyMovieRack as a startup. I started in college when I didn't even know what startup meant. It's my pet project and our team is glued together not by profit motives, craze for running a startup etc. but by our passion for coding, love of movies/TV shows and desire to build a platform for audience of world’s largest film producing country," says the founder, who works as an R&D Engineer at Directi.
