Mumbai based startup Flockport today announced the launch of Flockport.com, the first Linux container (LXC) sharing website that will offer users popular web applications in portable containers that can be deployed in seconds.
LXC stand for Linux containers. Containers are isolated lightweight operating environments that run within your host OS.
Flockport's objective is to deliver the cloud like flexibility of portable application instances that can be freely moved around to everyone. You can make your own cloud, and without the overhead of virtualization. Flockport utility will let users and developers to view, share and download Flockport containers directly to their systems.
Flockport.com is basically a hub to download and share preconfigured LXC containers. Flockport delivers web stacks and applications in preconfigured containers that can be deployed in any LXC environment in a simple, predictable and easy way.
With Flockport users can launch, clone, backup, deploy applications with minimum fuss and access a growing collection of preconfigured containers that are ready to go.
LXC has been baking for some time. Ubuntu has been the target deployment environment with documentation support for other distributions minimal to lacking. This may have led to the perception that it is somewhat immature and held back its adoption to a large extent.
Flockport.com is a free service. Flockport will shortly let users deploy Flockport containers directly to the cloud, and help public cloud providers broaden their market base by letting customers deploy complex applications in seconds.
Flockport is a start up based in Mumbai founded by Indrajit Banerjee. Indrajit has over 14 years experience in enterprise software marketing and has previously headed the India marketing operations of Savvion, Progress Software and Redhat.
