RenewIT is a Bangalore based company with a mission of making computers affordable to everyone in India. It was founded in 2009 by Mukund BS who is an alumnus of Indian Institute of Management Calcutta. Newport Computers based in US provided the initial support and hand holding to the company for a period of two years.
The company has a goal of increasing low cost, high quality computers and related accessories and parts so that they can be made accessible to NGOs, students, small businesses and other users. They remarket and refurbish the computers which they source from big MNCs. By doing this, they are trying to lessen the prevailing digital divide in our country. Till now, they have helped 18186 people buy affordable computers. Most of the buyers are first time computer users.
According to the data collected by Census 2011, India has an IT penetration of just 9.5% at a household level. This percentage means that less than 1 in every 10 households in India enjoys the luxury of owning a computer. This figure is very less when compared to other countries. China has an IT penetration of more than 30%.
For a country’s progress and development- it is important that everyone has access to computers. Today, mobile phones are accessible to everyone and we all can see how that has had a positive effect in the development of the country and its citizens. This effect can be doubled with computers.
The computers sourced from MNCs go through a rigorous and long process of checking and evaluation. After the evaluation, all the damaged parts are replaced or repaired to make the computer at par with the standards of quality of the company who originally manufactured it. These refurbished are then sold at a very low cost so that people from every walk of life can afford it.
RenewIT is a Microsoft Registered Refurbisher. It also has the authority to provide original Microsoft licenses with its refurbished computers at an affordable price. These licenses have been made available to the company by Microsoft at roughly one tenth the cost of commercial licenses.
