India will be 2nd Largest Internet User base in the World in 2014

By June 2014, India will have 243 million Internet users which will be more than US internet users and it will make India as the second largest Internet base in the world after China.

Currently, India has third largest internet user base in the world with  around 190 million internet users and China  has largest user base with more than 300 million Internet users while the US has an estimated 207 million Internet users. In october it was claimed that India has surpasses the 200 million mark already.

As per I-Cube 2013 report, the number of Internet users in India is expected to rise 18.53 per cent in the coming eight months to reach 24.3 crore i.e. 243 million by June 2014.

According to the report, the number of internet users in urban India was 137 Million in October 2013 and is estimated to touch 141 Million by December 2013. Notably, rural India has saw a year-on-year growth of 58 per cent of active Internet users since June 2012 as it reached 68 Million rural internet users in October and is estimated to reach 72 million by December 2013.

Mobile internet is also growing at steady rate in India with 0.4 per cent mobile internet users in 2012, the penetration has grown to 2.4 per cent in 2013.

Interestingly, as per reports 50 per cent of the urban internet users access Internet daily and in rural India 70 per cent of the active internet users also access internet using mobile phones, while 32 per cent use internet only through mobile.

The smart phone user base in India is growing very rapidly and this is the one of a primary reason as why Internet users are growing with such as pace outnumbering US and probably China in couple of years, thanks to affordable smartphones from local mobile handset manufacturers such as Micromax, Karbonn and Spice than even who doesn't have PC or laptops with them are now accessing Internet on the move.
