In order to lure customer and bring attention to website Groupon India offered customer Onion sale for Rs.9/Kg which is about 1/6 th of current market price and the offering created such a buzz among Indian customers the site went down and crashed. For last few months Onion prices are sky rocketed high in India and considering onions being one of most used food commodity among Indian population, Groupon India made this tactic to bring attention to the website.

Groupon which offers daily deal to its customer  gave onion discount so deep that within 44 minutes 3,000 kilograms of onions were sold out, causing the website to crash and till the end of the deal 19859 users bought 8,000 kilograms of onions from Groupon India website reports Aljazeera America website. The users are restricted to buy 1 kilogram each.

The website's listing for the discounted onions  deal was closed last week, although the goal of Groupon was to bring attention the deal however got worsen when people flooded to the website and this caused the crashing down of website.

"We wanted to sell it at a price that most of us have completely forgotten," said Anur Warikoo, chief executive of Groupon in India. "This kind of onion price was last seen in 1999."

Groupon, which offers daily discounted deals on everything from restaurant buffets to beauty products, shoes and watches, offered onions at 9 rupees or about 15 cents a kilogram.
