Last year, Indian space agency, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), had disclosed that it aims to set up 6 incubation centres and the same number of research & development centres across the country over the next one year.
Called as ‘ISRO-Space Technology Incubation Center (S-TIC)’, one of such incubators was already opened in Agartala in September last year, at the ‘Spacetronics’ conclave.
Now in a latest to this, Tiruchirappalli (Tiruchi or Trichy) in Tamil Nadu has been chosen as the next spot for S-TIC, disclosed K. Sivan, ISRO Chairman and Secretary, Department of Space, Government of India, while addressing the graduation day of St. Joseph’s College at Tiruchirappalli.
ISRO wants to promote space technology in unrepresented areas of India which has Research and Development potential and for this ISRO is tying up with the Academia, Industry and R&D institutions in different regions of the country.
This is expected to inculcate much required research culture among the student community. The final year students will be exposed to the problems of relevance and importance to ISRO and proof of concept or prototype developed by them will be validated through nearby tie-up industries. The products once realised will be validated and qualified in the existing facilities of ISRO. Once qualified, they can be inducted in the on-going projects of ISRO and buy back arrangement can be made. Through this, it is hoped to enthuse students to think differently to initiate start-up enterprises which can generate employment.
From having 17 million gigabytes of precious geo-spatial data to opening up its indigenous technology of lithium-ion batteries to local startups, ISRO is now proactively participating in modernization of Indian industries with inviting participation from young entrepreneurs across India.
