WalmartLabs Acquires Bangalore-based Mobile Analytics Startup Appsfly

A couple of months back we reported that WalmartLabs, the technology unit of Walmart, is close to acquire a couple of Indian startups strategic to its business. Today, it has now been reported that WalmartLabs has acquired a Bangalore-based mobile analytics aka MicroApps startup,

With this, WalmartLabs has made its first ever Indian acquisition.

Founded in 2016, by Akshay Kingar, Vijay Bhaskar, Shashank Singh and Karthik T, AppsFly has developed an AppSteam platform to build and distribute MicroApps. AppSteam is capable of streaming micro apps onto any publisher app based on context and intent of the user.

MicroApps are apps in itself which mimic any native app that you find on AppStore / PlayStore, with a minimal functionality that is served right in the context of the publisher apps.

Hari Vasudev, country head and vice-president for technology at Walmart Labs India, said: “As a key market of growth and expansion, this is an important step we have taken in India. At Walmart, innovation is our DNA and our teams are invested in creating a seamless experience to let customers shop anytime and anywhere.”

WalmartLabs, which has been on the lookout to acquire start-ups since 2015, has yet to make any acquisitions until now despite in talks with several of them. Walmart seems to be stepping on the pedal in India, after picking up a 77 per cent stake in the country’s largest e-commerce marketplace Flipkart.

Incubated at Axilor Ventures, AppsFly was also part of 13 startups shortlisted by Z Nation Lab’s first startup boot-camp, in 2016.
