As an unfortunate thing, India is figured in top 10 Spam sending countries in the world, accounting for nearly 3% of total spam sent globally in 2nd quarter of year 2008. As per report by security firm Secure Computing, it is estimated that these Top 10 countries account for 55% of total spam volume of the world.
US is on top of spammers list with 16.56%, making a large gap between it following countries. Russian Federation, Turkey and Brazil is on 2nd, 3rd and 4th on list respectively. India ranked 9th in list accounts for nearly 3% of total spams sent across the globe.
Interestingly the report also revealed a spam-based email attack that links to new Web-based malware and features news on Hollywood celebrities such as Angelina Jolie as bait, whose sole purpose is to download malware posing security threat. The report recognized ‘Angelina Jolie’ as a name used on top of list of malware containing mails followed by other big names such as Barack Obama, Paris Hilton, Britney and Jessica Simpson.
Other interesting thing depicted in report in this report is that – out of the 2008 roster of Fortune 500 companies, a mere 202 appear to be using any of the forgery counter-measures provided by SPF (Sender Policy Framework), DKIM (Domain Keys Identified Mail), these these are two forgery countermeasures that can be used by anyone looking to protect the integrity of their outgoing electronic correspondence (email).
Spammers also continue to use pop culture and current events such Olympics to lure and persuade users into responding and clicking links that poses security threats.
