An Israel Start-up - Tactile World has developed a Computer Mouse device for visually impaired and blind people that enable them to interact with computer and web by enabling them to read and understand text as well as graphic objects shown on the computer screen. The device has has two pads, each with 16 pins along with a supplied software that translates text displayed on the screen into Braille - a method that is widely used by blind people to read and write. More interestingly what this device for blinds do differently to common computer mouse is, As the cursor controlled by the mouse is moved across the screen, the pins rise and fall to represent the text across which they are moving. One pad represents the character under the cursor, the other gives the reader information about what is coming next, such as whether it is a letter or the end of the word. This advance information makes interpretation easier. As the user reads the text, the system also announces the presence of links to other websites. And the user can opt, if he wishes, to have the computer read the whole text out loud. The device costs around $650 in comparison to Braille ...

Tikitag.com, which offers real world objects tagging through its RFID based tagging service that based on the concept of linking the online world with the offline ones, has now started its services in India along with its packages that includes RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) Readers and Tags that stick to objects. The Tikitag package includes a USB-enabled RFID reader and 10 RFID tags, and provides access to a its community website where users can create and share new and real world tikitag applications. Applications on offer include allowing linking of tags to URLs. In RFID based taaging service offered by Tikitag, two main components are involved one is - Transponder i.e. 'Tags' that are attached to the object and the Interrogator which is 'RFID reader'. Communication between the RFID Reader and Tags occurs wire-lessly and generally does not require a line of sight between the devices. TechCrunch a well known Weblog and now more than a weblog, a network cum organization of people obsessed with technology and start-ups led by Michael Arrington are visualizing a Tablet PC that will cost $200 and run nothing more than just Firefox - people's very own browser which just ended up making world record in number of downloads. The ultra slim Tabloid PC device would totally be based on Open Source i.e. free technologies right from OS (BSD/Linux), Desktop/ OnScreen keywboard (Gnome, again open source) and Google Gears for widgets / plugins. Techcrunch in its blog post says about its idea of the device: The idea is to turn it on, bypass any desktop interface, and go directly to Firefox running in a modified Kiosk mode that effectively turns the browser into the operating system for the device. Add Gears for offline syncing of Google docs, email, etc., and Skype for communication and you have a machine that will be almost as useful as a desktop but cheaper and more portable than any laptop or tablet PC.
