Microsoft Mediaroom

Microsoft Corporation today launched Microsoft Mediaroom with virtualization, making Mediaroom the first Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) platform to offer virtualization support.

Mediaroom with virtualization can deliver up to a sixfold reduction in the number of physical servers required to support a full-featured IPTV service, significantly reducing hardware and management costs and speeding time to market for Mediaroom customers by up to three weeks.

Mediaroom with virtualization is designed to provide a cost-effective yet full-featured IPTV platform for smaller operators, for operators launching new services as they scale their subscriber base, and for operators who want to extend an existing service into new markets to serve lower-density communities.

Microsoft Mediaroom amplifies TV experience and subscribed customers get Mediaroom-powered TV service, favorite shows, channels, movies, and sports – all in digital and High-Definition (HD) picture quality.

Combine that with an easy on-screen guide and advanced features like a Digital Video Recorder (DVR), Video On Demand (VOD), lightning-fast channel change, the ability to watch up to six channels at one time, and you’ll see why Microsoft Mediaroom is the best TV experience – letting you control not just what you watch, but when and where you watch it. Plus, cool media-sharing capabilities let you share photos, videos, and stream music right on your TV.

Microsoft Mediaroom is already being used in over two million homes and is offered by many of the world’s leading telecom providers. Find out if it’s available in your area and subscribe to a Microsoft Mediaroom-powered TV service today.

With virtualization support, it is possible to deploy and operate a full Mediaroom-powered TV service for up to 30,000 subscriber homes per market using fewer than 10 physical servers. Even for deployments of greater than 30,000 subscriber homes, a mix of virtualized and dedicated servers can still provide efficiency benefits.

MIcrosoft Mediaroom service is available in US area only through AT&T U-verse and earlier past week launched in Russia through Russian Telco and VimpelCom.

A really interesting green computer technology I found is Userful Multiplier. It’s where multiple people can use the same computer at the same time each with their own monitor, mouse and keyboard. This saves a lot of electricity and e-waste. A company called Userful recently set a virtualization world record by delivering over 350,000 virtual desktops to schools in Brazil. They have a free 2-user version for home use too. Check it out: userful.com
