Internet DownInternet and phone communications in various countries like India, Singapore, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Taiwan and Pakistan and been disrupted and it is believed that 65% of traffic to India was down. The reason was severed submarine cable near the Alexandria cable station in Egypt which all been cut.

Even I could see the slowdown effects of same on my broadband internet connection till today morning (21st December, 08). The full proof work is still going on and second subsea cable is being laid near Malta and it will take 31 December to fully repair the line. Serious effects has been predicted to economies of most effected countries.

According to report published by Bloomberg – Internet traffic “from Mumbai to London has now been rerouted via Hong Kong which may lead to congestion and increased latency on this route,” Reliance said in an e-mailed “traffic disruption update,” adding that it is working with the affected customers to restore all services.

The main damage is to the four submarine cables running across the Mediterranean and through the Suez Canal and the cause of this is believed to be seismic activity or could even be the anchors of big ships.
